About COMAP

Who We Are:

COMAP, the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, is an award-winning non-profit organization whose mission is to improve mathematics education for students of all ages. Since 1980, COMAP has worked with teachers, students, and business people to create learning environments where mathematics is used to investigate and model real issues in our world.

What We Do:

COMAP develops curriculum materials and teacher development programs that are multidisciplinary, academically rigorous, and fun for teachers to teach and students to learn. COMAP's educational philosophy is centered around mathematical modeling: using mathematical tools to explore real-world problems. Our products are developed in print, video, and multi-media formats.

COMAP conducts research and analysis on the preparation of future mathematics educators and issues the results in newsletters and reports.

COMAP provides technical assistance and professional development support to educators at all levels.

How We Do It:

COMAP supports the reform movement in mathematics by developing its materials in the spirit of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. We do this by:

  • using a multidisciplinary approach where students use mathematical modeling and technology to investigate important issues in their lives;
  • creating materials to broaden students' appreciation for mathematics both as an evolving science and as a powerful tool to explore our world;
  • issuing research reports aimed at strengthening teacher preparation in mathematics at all levels; and
  • promoting collaboration between the educational community and practitioners of mathematics in the business world.

Some of Our Accomplishments:

COMAP videos have won dozens of academic and television awards, including the American Film and Video Award Gold Medal, and the Golden Hugo from the National Science Films Board.

COMAP developed the PBS television series and textbook For All Practical Purposes: An Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics.

COMAP developed two PBS television series "Against All Odds: Inside Statistics" and "Algebra: In Simplest Terms."

COMAP developed a grades 9–12 mathematics textbook series Mathematics: Modeling Our World.

COMAP produces innovative curriculum newsletters for elementary and high school teachers, and a quarterly journal for undergraduate educators.
